Overview

Gamma Knife and other stereotactic radiosurgery systems allow highly precise delivery of radiation to brain targets with minimal impact on surrounding tissue. They are used to treat brain metastases, benign tumours such as meningiomas and acoustic neuromas, and vascular malformations.

Treatment is typically delivered in a single session, and most patients are discharged the same day. Outcomes depend on lesion type, size, and location, with high rates of local control reported for appropriately selected cases.

Patient selection and planning

Detailed imaging with contrast-enhanced MRI is essential for treatment planning. The radiosurgery team, including neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical physicists, collaborates to design a plan that maximises the dose to the target while sparing critical structures.

Stereotactic radiosurgery continues to expand its role as imaging improves and long-term outcome data accumulates, offering patients a non-invasive alternative for conditions that would otherwise require open surgery.
